Dress: Vintage
Leggings: DKNY
Shoes: Melissa x Vivienne Westwood

Showing some back

This is an oldie but goodie.  The shirt/dress used to be my mother’s and it’s been a part of my wardrobe for almost the past ten years.  As a vintage clothing wearer it really boggles my mind to hear people talk about having articles of clothing fall apart after a couple of wearings.  I have things that are going on ninety years old and thse pieces are definitely delicate but all my stuff that is post 1950 have tons of life in them.  I hold onto things for so long and nothing has fallen apart.

Outfit Post #11 and The Liberty Belle Spectacular

The flyer

This year for the fourth of July I took advantage of the mid-week day off from work and went to the Liberty Belle Spectacular.  This was an event held by Dances of Vice and I have been trying to make it to one of their events for ages.  Most of the events are on Fridays and Saturdays and those are very busy work nights for me so this was a prime opportunity despite the fact that the fourth of July is not a holiday that I make a big deal of.

Dress and shoes: 1940’s vintage

Flowers: A.C. Moore
Ring: The Hollywood Collection

The theme encompasses the 1920’s-1950’s but I went full on WWII.  Unfortunately my curls and rolls did not survive the heat that well.  My goodness that place was packed to the brim when I got there.  I should have shown up a lot earlier because it seemed I had missed a lot of the performances.  They opened at 5pm and I didn’t think things would really kick off until dark but I’ve learned my lesson.  Here’s a few things I did catch…

Milk and Soda: Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it

The inspiration

Anyone remember the TV show Laverne and Shirley?  I haven’t watched it in a long time but I think it was Laverne who liked to drink Pepsi and milk together.  This sounded like puke in a glass and I didn’t know anyone who didn’t agree.  I came across this vintage 7-Up ad and was intrigued.  Was milk and different types of soda a common drink concoction in the 50’s?  I had to try it.  Sprite is more readily available to me so I used that.  I don’t think there is any difference between Sprite and 7-Up, right?  Well I have to say this was kind of yummy.  It kind of tasted like fizzy whipped cream.  When I added the Sprite to the milk there was some slight curdling but it was hardly noticeable.  I was a bit apprehensive as I brought the glass to my mouth to taste it but then I realized there’s not much difference between this and a root beer float.  People seemed grossed out by this idea but I know plenty who are happy to have a root beer float.  Go on, give it a try or if you’ve been drinking this stuff for years let me know.

Hat: Diana Exclusive
Dress: Stop Staring
Shoes: Jessica Simpson

This outfit is all about the hat!  It’s a vintage piece I picked up years ago at an antique store and I’m amazed that not a single feather has fallen out.  It did use to have a chin strap but that broke the first time I tried to wear it.  I just secure it with bobby pins now.  I don’t really like admitting to the brand of my shoes but even though I don’t like Jessica Simpson as a celebrity, she does have a decent line of shoes.  I got these on sale for $19 and they are one of my more comfortable pairs of heels.  Sometimes there are good products that I will turn my nose up at just because it’s associated with images I don’t like or I feel would misrepresent me if people knew I used it.  I am slowly growing though.  My biggest example is my perfume.  I used to exclusively wear Chanel no.5 because it has been around since the 1920’s and I liked the famous Marylin Monroe quote.  It smelled decent on me but it didn’t seem to last.  One of the times I was buying a bottle of Chanel I received a sample of Juicy Couture and it smelled fabulous on me.  It had great staying power and I couldn’t help but continuously sniff my wrist because it smelled so good.  I didn’t start wearing it till years later though because I couldn’t get over the fact that Juicy Couture just was not “me”.  I’ve converted now but I still miss the Chanel no.5 stigma whenever somebody asks me what type of perfume I wear.

Top: BCBG Maxamara
Skirt: Vivienne Westwood
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Am I wearing these shoes too much?  They are so comfortable.  It’s nice to be able to add some height without killing my feet.  I was in a pinup mood again so I tried a forward roll bang with victory rolls.  I’m still trying to perfect my technique.  I use a foam rat in the bang but my hair is very thin so I have to be very careful to make sure nothing shows through.  Women use to collect the hair they shed and make a rat out of it.  I shed a ton but I always forget to save it but I really should follow through with that.  Some of you probably think that sounds gross but I like that some good can come out of fallen hair.  I hate to waste anything.

“Hello Sailor”

I was watching Dita Von Teese on RuPaul’s Drag Race last night and it inspired me to wear victory rolls today.  If I’m going to wear victory rolls then I need a pin up girl outfit to match.  I love the brand this dress is from, the whole line is vintage inspired dresses and they all have amazing curve hugging ability.  I used to have a huge vintage clothing collection, mainly focusing on the 40’s, but sold a lot of it a few years back.  I regret selling some of it and I think I want to start rebuilding it.  I just need to figure out how to balance that with my Vivienne Westwood addiction.
